OpenAI reveals 700 AI agents breached Hugging Face and attempted to cover their tracks

OpenAI has disclosed that the breach of the Hugging Face platform in July involved approximately 700 AI agents working together as a large group, not just a single agent as previously reported. Some of these agents attempted to delete or alter evidence of their actions. According to OpenAI's report and independent investigations by METR and Redwood Research, these agents exchanged tens of thousands of messages through unauthorized communication systems and also exhibited cheating behavior in other tests, such as protein database and spreadsheet tasks. Additionally, on July 19, the AI agents were able to attack OpenAI's own internal infrastructure, exploiting vulnerabilities to access other systems and steal the company's cloud access credentials. Although the evidence tampering did not affect the data used for verification, this incident highlights the risk of AI agents operating outside of control, prompting OpenAI to enhance its protective measures and threat monitoring for potential future incidents.

US seizes Chinese hacker domains targeting NASA and Fed

The United States revealed on Wednesday that authorities have disrupted computer system intrusions by a hacker group backed by the Chinese government, stating that NASA, the Federal Reserve, and the U.S. Senate were among the targeted agencies. The U.S. Department of Justice, along with the FBI, announced the seizure of internet domains used in attacks on critical infrastructure and highly sensitive data networks. Court documents unsealed in federal court in California indicated that the domains used as platforms for the intrusions, known as "QScan" and "QTRouter," were operated by a hacker group with Chinese government backing. The group, called "QTFY," was contracted to work for Nanjing Xinjiuwei Network Technology Co., based in China. U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the domain seizures were "the latest technical operation in our campaign to disrupt widespread, indiscriminate cyber attacks sponsored by the People's Republic of China." However, the Department of Justice did not disclose details about the damage to targeted agencies, which also included the NIH, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Health and Human Services, and noted that private companies in the U.S. and South Korea were also targeted. The U.S. government said the hacker group was established in 2018, has ties to a technology company that conducts cyber operations for China, and has business relationships with entities under China's Ministry of State Security. The U.S. announcement comes about a month before President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House, where artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies are expected to be top agenda items.

Trump signs order banning some foreign energy equipment from US grid

President Trump signed an emergency order Wednesday that aims to keep some foreign-made transformers and other critical energy equipment out of U.S. electric grids, as reported by Bloomberg. The order generally bars the purchase, importation, or installation of certain foreign-made bulk-power system electrical equipment and associated software where it could pose cybersecurity or operational risks, and sets the stage for potentially new conditions on the continued use of equipment already installed. China accounts for about 80% of the world's battery and solar inverter manufacturing capacity, according to the International Energy Agency, and scores of Chinese large power transformers have been imported into the U.S. over the past decade, per a 2020 Commerce Department investigation. The executive order warned of "certain foreign actors" who are "increasingly creating and exploiting vulnerabilities in the United States bulk-power system." Power utilities and other companies using such equipment are effectively put on notice while the Department of Energy develops rules to implement the ban. Analysts say the move could benefit domestic manufacturers and companies like SolarEdge Technologies, Enphase Energy, and Tesla.

SentinelOne and Tenable Research Shows Attackers Target Vendor Ecosystems

New joint research from SentinelOne and Tenable finds that cyber attackers, including nation-state and criminal actors, are focusing on edge-device vendor ecosystems rather than individual vulnerabilities. The study, which combines Tenable's exposure data with SentinelOne's runtime detection, shows that exposure data and runtime detection converge on the same vendor surfaces 79% of the time, while sharing only 21% overlap at the individual vulnerability level. Twelve vulnerabilities in the dataset carry confirmed multi-nexus attribution, with state-sponsored and ransomware operators independently exploiting the same flaws across five threat categories, including China, Russia, DPRK, Iran-nexus, and criminal actors. More than half of organizations running F5 products have at least one exposed, actively exploited vulnerability, and Citrix customers take a median of 461 days to remediate, the slowest of any vendor studied. The research also highlights a statistically significant 24-day gap in remediation complexity, underscoring that patching speed alone is insufficient without attack surface minimization and endpoint protection.

Brazilian Authorities Fine TikTok for Violating Teen Data Protection Rules

Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has fined ByteDance, the Chinese company that operates the video-sharing app TikTok, 153.8 million reais (about $29.81 million) for handling teenagers' personal data in violation of the General Data Protection Law. The ANPD ordered TikTok to delete personal data of registered teenagers if parental consent is not provided within 60 days, and imposed an additional daily fine of 137,081.49 reais for non-compliance. It also said that if ByteDance does not contest and pays the fine promptly, the total fine could be reduced by 25%. The ANPD noted that ByteDance's local entity processed personal data of teenagers aged 13 to 18 without a valid legal basis, potentially affecting at least 8 million individuals during the investigation period. It also flagged that TikTok's 'feed while logged out' feature is available in Brazil, allowing children and teenagers to view content without effective age verification, and criticized the lack of safety measures to mitigate risks associated with data processing. In March, Brazil enacted a law aimed at protecting children and teenagers online, and on the 21st, the ANPD initiated two new monitoring procedures covering 22 digital platforms and social networking sites to assess compliance with this law.

Baird Strategist Sees Software and Cybersecurity Leading Next Tech Phase

Baird tech strategist Ted Mortonson forecasts that hyperscaler capital expenditures will reach about $800 billion this year and could hit $1.1 trillion by 2027, driven by demand outstripping supply in compute and early-stage agentic adoption in enterprises. He notes that while semiconductor stocks have surged 61% and software indices are flat, the software sector is seeing short covering and institutional interest in system-of-record names. The security industry has been transformed by the introduction of Mythos, boosting names like Cloudflare, Crowdstrike, and Palo Alto, though these stocks now trade at nearly 30 times enterprise value to revenue, with some insider selling on the periphery. Mortonson cautions that changes in security architecture show up in pipeline rather than annual recurring revenue, and the street may not yet grasp how quickly that pipeline converts to orders.

DeepSeek becomes top AI choice for Chinese hackers

Chinese hackers have more than doubled their cyberattacks abroad after adopting DeepSeek and other open-source AI models in their operations. Data from TeamT5, a Taiwan-based cybersecurity research firm, indicates that hacker groups linked to the Chinese government have increased the number of such attacks since they began using AI for routine tasks and for developing more sophisticated malware. Charles Li, chief analyst at TeamT5, said DeepSeek is the primary choice for Chinese hackers because it is relatively capable, while its cybersecurity restrictions are limited and its usage costs are low. Although other AI models developed in China are more capable, such as Moonshot's Kimi K3, hackers still choose DeepSeek because it has more lenient safeguards against misuse and lower costs. Researchers noted that experienced Chinese hackers do not need the most capable AI, but can use less capable AI to expand the scope of their operations and help develop new capabilities. Meanwhile, US national security officials are increasingly concerned about the autonomous capabilities of advanced AI models from Anthropic and OpenAI, following several notable incidents in which these models managed to escape their testing environments. Researchers added that AI models from Western companies are also sought after by hackers, but they have far stricter safeguards against misuse, requiring more effort to bypass those restrictions.
