Coupang Posts US$8.9 Billion Q2 Revenue, Swings to Loss

Coupang reported second quarter 2026 revenue of US$8.9 billion, up from US$8.5 billion a year earlier, while swinging from net income of US$32 million to a net loss of US$570 million. The loss reflects regulatory fines, higher integration costs from acquisitions such as Farfetch, supply chain disruption and heavier marketing. Developing Offerings, including expansion in Taiwan and the Coupang Eats platform, is gaining traction but is expected to keep EBITDA in loss territory for now. The next few quarters of segment reporting will be important, especially whether Developing Offerings EBITDA starts to narrow its losses and how product commerce margins trend after the data incident and fines.

Coupang Q2 revenue misses estimates as margin pressures persist

Coupang reported second-quarter revenue of $8.86 billion, missing analyst estimates of $9.05 billion, while its adjusted loss per share of $0.09 beat expectations by 69.1%. The company's operating margin fell to negative 6.3% from positive 1.7% a year earlier, driven by lingering effects from a data incident, a $410 million regulatory fine in Korea, and increased marketing spend to reacquire customers. Active customers rose by 800,000 year on year to 24.7 million, and management expects margins to recover to pre-incident levels by mid-2027 as capacity utilization improves. Coupang also highlighted rapid expansion in Taiwan and ongoing investments in AI to enhance logistics and advertising.

Coupang Debuts on 2026 Fortune Global 500 After 14% Revenue Rise

Coupang Inc. has been named to the 2026 Fortune Global 500 list for the first time, following a 14 percent year-over-year revenue increase to 34.5 billion dollars in 2025. The Seattle-based technology company, which serves customers in 190 countries and territories, also rose ten spots to number 132 on the U.S. Fortune 500 this year. Coupang attributed its growth to multi-billion-dollar investments in proprietary AI, advanced robotics, and integrated fulfillment and logistics infrastructure, which helped drive over 5 billion dollars in sales of U.S. goods, services, and agriculture to overseas markets. The company has invested more than 84 million dollars into global AI startups since 2023 and is expanding its rapid cross-border logistics, including a 256,000-square-foot fulfillment center in Riverside, California, that delivers American products to South Korea and Taiwan in as fast as three days. Coupang's expansion in emerging markets like Taiwan now reaches approximately 70 percent of the geography with next-day service.

South Korean Court Suspends FTC Designation of Coupang Founder Kim Bom as Controlling Entity

A South Korean court has suspended the Fair Trade Commission's designation of Coupang founder Kim Bom as the controlling entity, temporarily pausing stricter disclosure and group-governance rules for the NYSE-listed e-commerce company. The Seoul High Court's injunction will lapse 30 days after the main lawsuit ruling, leaving the regulatory status unresolved. If the final ruling upholds the FTC's designation, Coupang could face tighter oversight, incremental compliance costs, and closer scrutiny of related-party dealings and expansion. The suspension gives management more time to focus on operations without the full weight of the designation, and a final ruling in Coupang's favor could ease regulatory pressure and help separate governance questions from the company's longer-term growth story.

Coupang Slides 3.21% Ahead of Earnings as Valuation Debate Intensifies

Coupang shares fell 3.21% in the latest trading session, extending a month-long decline of 7.49% as investors brace for an upcoming earnings report that combines weaker profit expectations with modest revenue growth. The stock has dropped 21.76% over the past 90 days and 45.87% over the past year, signaling cooling sentiment around earnings risk. A widely followed narrative pegs Coupang's fair value at $26.29 per share, suggesting the stock is 35.9% undervalued relative to its last close of $16.86, based on assumptions of continued margin expansion from automation, AI, and logistics investments. However, that bullish case could unravel if losses in Developing Offerings persist or if higher compliance and operating costs following a data breach weigh on margins longer than expected.

Coupang faces 300 billion won tax assessment after NTS special audit

South Korea's National Tax Service has notified Coupang of a preliminary tax assessment of around 300 billion won, about 200 million dollars, following a six-month special tax audit. The Seoul Regional Tax Office's Investigation Division 4 recently completed unscheduled audits of Coupang and its logistics subsidiary Coupang Fulfillment Services, covering the 2022 to 2024 fiscal years. The investigation began after a large-scale personal information leak involving 37.55 million people last November, with the NTS focusing on suspected tax issues in transactions between Coupang's domestic headquarters and CFS, as well as possible offshore tax issues involving fund transfers between Coupang, its U.S. entity, and related affiliates. The tax authority also reviewed information management costs claimed as corporate deductions and intends to deny corporate tax reductions granted on the basis of such costs following Coupang's violation of the Personal Information Protection Act. The company has not issued a statement but is reportedly reviewing possible appeal procedures with Yulchon Law Firm and can request a pre-assessment review within 30 days of receiving the notice.

South Korea fines Coupang US$410 million, U.S. lawmakers allege unfair targeting

South Korean regulators fined Coupang approximately US$410 million for a past data breach and alleged privacy violations, while a U.S. House Judiciary Committee report accused South Korea of unfairly targeting the company. The clash between U.S. lawmakers and South Korean authorities raises fresh questions about Coupang's regulatory exposure in its core market. The fine could pressure near-term earnings, complicate the company's push toward better profitability, and test its flexibility to keep investing in AI, logistics, and international expansion while absorbing higher compliance and legal costs. Coupang's Q1 2026 result showed higher revenue but a US$266 million net loss.
