Hormuz Strait Closure Drives Up Costs, Major Companies Gradually Raise Prices

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the Iran war is pushing raw material and shipping costs higher, leading many manufacturers to gradually raise prices on goods ranging from beer, house paint, and potato chips to packaging. The Wall Street Journal reports that companies that have announced or are preparing price hikes include Boston Beer Company, Sherwin-Williams, International Paper, and Unilever, aiming to offset rising raw material costs. U.S. crude oil futures traded near 85 dollars per barrel on Friday, up about 25 percent from the start of the war, while the average U.S. gasoline price has risen to about 4.11 dollars per gallon from 2.98 dollars per gallon at the onset of the conflict. Sherwin-Williams is set to raise prices by 8 percent starting September 1 to offset raw material costs linked to oil prices, and following the announcement, its stock price rose more than 8 percent. The impact could exacerbate U.S. inflation and complicate the Federal Reserve's monetary policy, as investors had previously expected the Fed to cut interest rates, but after energy prices surged due to the war, the market is increasingly pricing in the possibility that the Fed may resume raising rates.

Stocks Settle Mostly Higher on Positive Earnings Results

U.S. stocks settled mostly higher on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing to a 1.5-week high, up 1.03%, and the S&P 500 adding 0.21%, while the Nasdaq 100 fell 0.98% to a 2.75-month low. Better-than-expected earnings from Boeing, Coca-Cola, and Sherwin-Williams supported the broader market, and software stocks rallied as investors rotated into recently underperforming sectors. However, the Nasdaq 100 was pressured by a deepening rout in chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks, driven by fresh concerns over artificial intelligence spending and rising competition from China, alongside an unexpected decline in U.S. July consumer confidence. Lower crude oil prices, with September WTI crude falling more than 4% to a one-week low, eased inflation concerns and pushed the 10-year Treasury yield down 5 basis points to 4.60%. The Conference Board's consumer confidence index unexpectedly fell to 90.8, below the expected 92.4, while the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller home price index rose 1.6% year-over-year in May, the largest increase in 10 months.

Sherwin-Williams raises full-year guidance on share gains, announces 8% price hike

Sherwin-Williams raised its full-year guidance based on first-half momentum, though it assumes no broad-based demand recovery for the remainder of 2026. The company attributed strong top and bottom-line growth to aggressive new account wins and share gains rather than market recovery, with the Paint Stores Group outperformance driven by Protective and Marine momentum in data centers and semiconductor infrastructure. An 8% price increase effective September 1st is designed to offset accelerating raw material inflation, which is expected to reach a high single-digit range in the second half. The company completed a store optimization initiative, closing 57 underperforming locations to improve long-term profitability, and expects to return to the high end of its 80 to 100 net new store opening target starting in 2027. Restructuring actions are expected to yield approximately $17 million in annual savings, with half realized in 2026.

Dow surges 520 points as chip stocks tumble on AI spending fears

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 520 points, or 1.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite ended flat after recovering from a 1.3% morning loss, as a sharp sell-off in semiconductor stocks weighed on the tech-heavy index. The rotation into traditional economy stocks lifted the Dow, with Sherwin-Williams gaining 8.3% on strong earnings, while Caterpillar fell 3.8% due to its ties to AI data center projects. Oil prices retreated, with Brent crude trading near $84 per barrel, down about 2.2%, after reports that the U.S. paused air strikes against Iran for diplomatic talks.

Sherwin-Williams Is a Notable Richard Chilton Stock Pick

The Sherwin-Williams Company is one of the 10 best stocks to buy according to billionaire Richard Chilton. The specialty chemicals company makes and sells paints, coatings, and other associated products, with shares flat over the year and up 4.5% year-to-date. Citi raised its price target to $380 from $355 and kept a Buy rating on June 24, after reinstating coverage on June 3 with a $355 target and Buy rating, viewing it as an attractive entry opportunity. UBS cut its target to $330 from $385 and downgraded the stock to Neutral from Buy on June 2, citing a more balanced risk-reward outlook. Aoris Investment Management noted in its first-quarter 2026 investor letter that weak US property sales and sluggish industrial economy have affected paint volumes and industrial coatings growth, leading to concerns about structurally slower end markets, and the firm sold its position to buy Cintas at a wider discount to fair value.

MP Materials vs Sherwin-Williams: Why This Analyst Picks the Rare Earth Stock for 2026

An analyst at The Motley Fool picks MP Materials over Sherwin-Williams as the better buy for 2026 and beyond, citing the strategic importance of rare earths and growth potential under the Trump administration. MP Materials, America’s only fully integrated rare earth producer, saw revenue grow 35% to $275.5 million in fiscal 2025 but posted a net loss of nearly $85.9 million as it invests in scaling operations. Sherwin-Williams, a 160-year-old coatings giant with nearly 4,900 company-owned stores, generated $23.6 billion in revenue and $2.6 billion in net income in the same period, with a 47-year streak of dividend increases. The analyst notes that MP Materials trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 260.9 times, a steep premium to Sherwin-Williams’ 27.4 times, but argues the rare earth company’s role as a national security asset and its government contracts could deliver explosive returns that a mature player like Sherwin-Williams rarely can.
