European stock exchange-traded funds posted positive net flows in July, their first month of inflows since the US-Iran conflict started in late February, according to Bloomberg data. BlackRock reported that its European equities products attracted $4.4 billion in July, describing the flows as anti-momentum allocations away from volatile chipmaker stocks. A strong earnings season and easing oil prices have renewed investor appetite for the region, with companies in the Stoxx Europe 600 on track for 22% year-on-year earnings growth in the second quarter, the strongest since 2022. UBS raised its year-end target for the Stoxx 600 to 690 points from 630, implying roughly 5% further upside, while Goldman Sachs projects 168% upside for UK clean energy developer Ceres Power and 102% for German defense contractor Rheinmetall over 12 months. The Stoxx 600 has gained 10.7% in 2026 and touched a record 663.4 points this month, with Germany's Dax, the FTSE 100, France's Cac 40, and Spain's Ibex also reaching highs.

Ukraine to Receive New Long-Range Artillery Shells by Late Summer

Ukraine is set to take delivery of new long-range artillery shells by late summer, extending the kill zone along the front and increasing pressure on Russia. The first batch will be used with the standard 155-millimeter guns Ukraine already operates, capable of reaching at least 60 kilometers, compared with the typical 30 to 40 kilometer range of conventional artillery. Laser-guided variants will also boost accuracy. Meanwhile, a new generation of shells equipped with ramjet engines is under development and could extend range beyond 150 kilometers. The Ukrainian government has secured over 540 million US dollars in funding from Norway, Denmark, Lithuania, Luxembourg, and Spain, as well as through the Czech Initiative, while Germany has pledged an additional 300 million euros, equivalent to roughly 50,000 rounds. Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall, said Ukraine's annual requirement for long-range shells could reach 1.2 million rounds.

NATO Allies Pledge Over $50 Billion in New Defense Procurement Deals

NATO allies have officially announced more than €50 billion, approximately $57 billion, in massive new defense procurement deals at the 2026 Ankara summit, driven by pressure from Washington for European self-reliance. This comes in addition to separate military aid packages including a €70 billion pledge for Ukraine. Total defense and security spending by European allies and Canada has already reached around 4% of GDP, progressing toward a 5% target by 2035. Major deals include Lockheed Martin and Rheinmetall establishing the first European ATACMS missile facility, RTX doubling Stinger missile production through European partnerships, and a new $40 billion NATO Drone Edge initiative for counter-uncrewed systems over five years. Analysts recommend defense ETFs like iShares U.S. Aerospace & Defense ETF, Invesco Aerospace & Defense ETF, and Themes Transatlantic Defense ETF to capture the expected multi-year revenue supercycle while mitigating single-stock risks.

KNDS Postpones IPO Amid European Defense Stock Volatility

KNDS has postponed its planned initial public offering, citing market volatility in the European defense sector. The Franco-German tank maker had intended to float about 20% of its shares in Paris and Frankfurt, with France and Germany each retaining 40% stakes, but weak sentiment across defense stocks made the timing too risky. The company, formed in 2015 through the merger of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Nexter, reported €4.4 billion in revenue for 2025, EBIT of €661 million, and an order backlog of €33.1 billion. KNDS said it completed required preparation work and held extensive talks with potential investors, who confirmed support for its strategy, but shareholders decided to wait for better market conditions. The delay follows reports that KNDS struggled to win support for a valuation above €12 billion, down from earlier estimates as high as €25 billion, as defense stocks like Rheinmetall, Hensoldt, and Renk have retreated.

Germany Cancels F126 Frigate Programme, Shifts to MEKO A-200

Germany has cancelled the troubled F126 frigate programme and will instead procure eight MEKO A-200 frigates from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, pending budget committee approval. The original six-frigate F126 commission held by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding was worth roughly $11.4 billion, but costs have exceeded $20.5 billion, with $2.6 billion already spent and delivery delayed by four years. The replacement contract prices four MEKO A-200 vessels at $7.2 billion, with an option for four more at roughly $6 billion, bringing the potential total to $13.2 billion for a proven design already in service with several navies. The cancellation erased billions in European defence value and sent Rheinmetall shares down as much as 18%, as the company had acquired Naval Vessels Lürssen in anticipation of a transfer that never materialised. Analysts at Abishai Financial Asia view the episode as a lesson in order-book concentration risk, noting that European defence equities had risen 259% over three years before the reversal.

Rheinmetall Falls 14% After Germany Cancels Its Biggest Frigate Program

Rheinmetall fell 14.81% intraday after Germany announced it is scrapping the F126 frigate program, abandoning plans for six large warships that would have been the biggest commissioned by the German navy since World War Two. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius informed industry figures and lawmakers of the decision, with Germany opting instead to purchase eight smaller Meko A-200 frigates. About 2 billion in F126 program costs are expected to be written off. TKMS AG & Co gained 8.38% intraday as the existing supplier of four Meko A-200 frigates at roughly 1 billion each. The cancellation is a significant setback for Rheinmetall, which had been set to take over as lead contractor on the 12.8 billion F126 program and had acquired shipbuilder Naval Yards Lurssen for 1.5 billion earlier this year as part of its push into naval defense.
