Roche gets FDA approval for HER2 companion diagnostics in gastroesophageal cancer

Roche announced that the FDA has approved expanded use of its PATHWAY HER2 (4B5) and VENTANA HER2 Dual ISH DNA Probe Cocktail tests as companion diagnostics to identify patients with HER2-positive metastatic gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma, including gastric, gastroesophageal junction, and esophageal adenocarcinoma, who may be eligible for treatment with Jazz Pharmaceuticals' ZIIHERA. This approval broadens the patient population eligible for HER2-targeted therapy, as previously no tests were approved to determine HER2 status in esophageal cancer. The tests, already widely used in breast and gastric cancers, are now part of Roche's comprehensive HER2 diagnostic portfolio, supporting personalized treatment approaches for this hard-to-treat disease.

Zymeworks Shares Rise Ahead of Key FDA Decision on Zanidatamab

Zymeworks shares climbed nearly 4.0% in pre-market trading as investors positioned themselves ahead of an important U.S. regulatory decision on zanidatamab, expected the following day. The FDA's PDUFA target action date for zanidatamab, a bispecific HER2-targeting antibody developed alongside Jazz Pharmaceuticals, is August 25, 2026, with the regulator reviewing the treatment for first-line HER2-positive locally advanced or metastatic gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma. Approval would immediately trigger a $250 million U.S. regulatory milestone payment, with up to an additional $190 million possible through regulatory milestones in other markets. Citi placed the stock on an upside 90-day catalyst watch earlier in August, while Truist and Wells Fargo have increased their price targets ahead of the PDUFA date. Zymeworks is also pursuing a roughly $929 million all-cash acquisition of Theravance Biopharma, expected to close in the second half of 2026, which would add commercial cash flows from the COPD treatment YUPELRI.

AbCellera Reports Q2 2026 Net Loss Widens to $55 Million as Revenue Falls to $4 Million

AbCellera Biologics reported a net loss of roughly $55 million for the second quarter of 2026, up from a $35 million loss a year earlier, while total revenue dropped to approximately $4 million from $17 million. The company completed enrollment for the phase 2 study of ABCL-635 in treating hot flashes ahead of schedule, with top-line data expected soon, and secured new T-cell engager collaborations with Vertex and Jazz Pharmaceuticals that added over $110 million in upfront cash. AbCellera maintains a strong liquidity position with over $565 million in cash and equivalents plus roughly $110 million in committed government funding, providing a runway of at least three years. Research and development expenses increased by about $7 million year-over-year, and the company missed its internal goal of moving another program into IND-enabling activities in the first half of 2026. The upcoming phase 2 data for ABCL-635 carries scientific risks, including the unresolved question of whether blocking NK3R in the pre-optic nucleus is necessary for efficacy, and the company acknowledged a pronounced placebo response in similar trials.

VERAXA Biotech shareholders urged to watch antibody therapeutics sector deals

Strategic licensing agreements and acquisitions in antibody-drug conjugates and T-cell engager therapeutics continue to create significant value for platform companies well before pivotal clinical trials. The Jazz Pharmaceuticals–AbCellera collaboration exemplifies how differentiated antibody technologies can command substantial financial commitments prior to clinical development. VERAXA Biotech AG is positioning its technology platform across both ADCs and T-cell engagers, two modalities that continue to attract strategic partnerships. Recent transactions demonstrate that pharmaceutical companies are actively seeking access to differentiated antibody engineering capabilities rather than waiting for late-stage clinical assets.

Harmony Biosciences Pursues Pipeline Growth Beyond Wakix

Harmony Biosciences is expanding its pipeline beyond its core narcolepsy drug Wakix to build a broader neuroscience franchise. The company is advancing pitolisant into late-stage trials for idiopathic hypersomnia, Prader-Willi syndrome, and myotonic dystrophy type 1, while developing gastro-resistant and high-dose formulations to improve tolerability and target fatigue and sleep inertia, with top-line data expected in 2027 and a target action date in 2028. Harmony is also entering orexin-2 receptor agonism with BP1.15205, a once-daily candidate for narcolepsy, and rare epilepsy through EPX-100, which is enrolling in two global Phase III trials for Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. The company faces increasing competition from multiple orexin-2 receptor agonists nearing approval, which could heighten payer scrutiny and pressure differentiation. HRMY carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) with a Value Score of A and a Growth Score of B, but a Momentum Score of D suggests investors may need patience as the market awaits clearer pipeline data.
