Allegiant Targets $140M in Synergies as Sun Country Integration Begins
Allegiant Travel Company closed its acquisition of Sun Country on May 13, and management now expects at least $140 million of annual run-rate synergies within three years of closing. In the second quarter, Sun Country contributed $167.3 million in revenues from the close through quarter-end, helping consolidated revenues rise 36.9% year over year to $943.5 million, with adjusted operating income of $87.1 million and a 9.2% adjusted operating margin. The integration plan includes network optimization, supplier consolidation, and a transition to a single operating certificate submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration. Consolidated debt ended June at $2.8 billion, including $546.8 million attributable to Sun Country, and the company expects roughly $850 million in 2026 capital expenditures. Fuel costs averaged $4.14 per gallon in the second quarter, up 71.1% year over year, and management projects third-quarter system capacity to decline about 6.5% year over year with adjusted operating margin between 1% and 3%.
Allegiant Travel Company shares have plunged 16.6% in the past four weeks even as second-quarter adjusted earnings sharply exceeded expectations and standalone unit revenue reached a quarterly record. The pullback puts the focus on whether better revenue productivity can outweigh volatile fuel costs, Sun Country integration demands, higher debt and continued capacity discipline. Second-quarter adjusted earnings of $2.19 per share increased 78% year over year and beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.27 by 72.4%, while standalone Allegiant revenues rose 16.1% to a record $776.2 million. Standalone total revenue per available seat mile increased 24.6% to a record 14.42 cents despite a 6.8% capacity reduction. Consolidated passenger revenues increased 33.1% to $822.5 million, third-party product revenues rose 36% to $45.8 million and fixed-fee contract revenues climbed 168.7% to $45.7 million, with Sun Country contributing $167.3 million of consolidated revenues from the May 13 acquisition close through quarter-end. Total operating expenses increased 21.9% to $922.4 million, aircraft fuel expense jumped 85.6% to $307.7 million, and total debt ended June at $2.8 billion. For the third quarter, management expects system capacity to decline about 6.5% year over year and adjusted operating margin between 1% and 3%. ALGT trades at 0.6X forward 12-month sales, in line with its five-year median, and carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) with a Value Score of A, a Growth Score of B, a Momentum Score of F and a VGM Score of B.
Raymond James cuts airline estimates on higher fuel, upgrades Allegiant
Raymond James lowered estimates across its airline coverage universe, citing a higher jet fuel price forecast, while upgrading Allegiant Travel to Strong Buy from Outperform. The broker raised its jet fuel price forecast for the second half of 2026, 2027 and 2028 by roughly 18%, 14% and 7%, respectively, with Gulf Coast jet fuel prices up 39% quarter-to-date through August 19. Analyst Savanthi Syth said the higher fuel forecast primarily reflects elevated refining margin assumptions rather than crude prices, and pointed to Allegiant's greater quarter-to-date share pullback despite a constructive backdrop excluding fuel. U.S. TSA throughput has run about 2.6% lower year-over-year quarter-to-date versus a 1.1% decline in scheduled seats, while Raymond James raised its fourth-quarter U.S. domestic capacity growth forecast to 2.3% from 1.5% in early August. In Europe, intra-Europe seat capacity is up about 5% year-over-year over the summer, and Syth expects a favorable supply inflection heading into winter as fuel-hedge rolloffs and earnings pressure prompt capacity discipline at Ryanair, easyJet, AF-KLM, IAG and Lufthansa.

The outlook assumes fuel at $3.75 per gallon for the rest of the year, while management flagged near-term headwinds from elevated pilot attrition at Sun Country and volatile fuel prices. The company also announced a new Expedia partnership and plans to debut a premium Allegiant First product on select aircraft in 2027.

BofA sees Delta, United entering a rare airline sweet spot
Bank of America has raised price targets across the airline sector, citing steady demand, stronger fares, and reduced fuel costs that may support greater profitability into second-quarter results. The brokerage lifted its target for Delta Air Lines to $100 from $93 and for United Airlines Holdings to $150 from $145, while also boosting objectives on American Airlines, Southwest, Alaska Air, JetBlue, Frontier, and Allegiant. BofA now expects Delta's second-quarter unit revenue growth of 13.4% and third-quarter unit sales growth of 14.7%, with adjusted diluted EPS for 2026 estimated at $6.50, the low end of Delta's guidance range. For United, the firm projects second-quarter unit revenue growth of 13.5% and third-quarter growth of 15.6%, raising its 2026 EPS forecast to $11.15. The call is supported by airfare data showing a 26.7% year-over-year surge in May and a 15% increase in travel agency ticket sales, while jet fuel prices have declined roughly 35% from early April highs. However, BofA warns that domestic capacity is expected to rise 3.9% in October and 6.9% in November, which could erode unit-revenue gains if airlines do not remain disciplined.
Allegiant Travel raises Q2 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to at least $1.25 after Sun Country acquisition
Allegiant Travel Company raised its second-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings per share guidance for the combined entity to at least $1.25, up from a prior standalone forecast of a loss of a penny to breakeven. The updated outlook reflects the acquisition of Sun Country Airlines, which closed on May 13, 2026, and includes Sun Country's results from that date through June 30. The company cited favorable demand at both airlines and a reduction in fuel expense during June, with average fuel cost per gallon now expected around $4.20, down from a previous estimate of $4.35. On a standalone basis, Allegiant expects second-quarter total revenue per available seat mile to increase more than 23% year over year. Despite the bullish guidance, Zacks Investment Research advises investors to hold the stock, citing headwinds such as fuel price volatility, rising labor costs, and an unattractive valuation.
Goldman Sachs raised its outlook on the airline industry, lifting its third-quarter and fourth-quarter 2026 net income forecast by 24% and 32% respectively, citing strong demand and a better competitive environment after Spirit ceased service in May. Analyst Catherine O’Brien raised price targets for several carriers, including Allegiant by 14% to $142, Alaska Air by 19% to $69, American Airlines by 50% to $15, Delta by 45% to $116, JetBlue by 28% to $4.50, Southwest by 17%, and United by 24% to $162. However, O’Brien downgraded SkyWest to Neutral from Buy and cut its price target by 14% to $108, warning that lower-than-expected industry capacity growth increases downside risk to SkyWest’s block hour production. She lowered her 2026 block hour growth forecast for SkyWest to 3.0% from 3.5% previously, and from 4.9% earlier this year, calling it a significant deceleration from recent years.
Allegiant Travel shares jump 5.5% on analyst upgrade and merger synergies
Allegiant Travel shares surged 5.5% to $116.10 in the last trading session on heavy volume, following an analyst upgrade and target price increase from Citigroup. The upgrade was driven by anticipated synergies and long-term earnings potential from Allegiant's merger with Sun Country Airlines, completed earlier in 2026. The combined network spans nearly 175 cities and 650 routes, strengthening Allegiant's position in the leisure travel market. The company is expected to report a quarterly loss of $0.54 per share on revenues of $743.28 million, with the consensus EPS estimate revised 5.6% higher over the past 30 days. The stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #3, or Hold.
Citi upgrades Allegiant to buy on merger synergies, sees airline earnings beats
Citi Research expects nearly every airline to beat second-quarter consensus estimates and issue upbeat third-quarter guidance, citing modest capacity growth, fare increases, and lower fuel costs. Analyst John Godyn upgraded Allegiant Travel Company to buy with a high-risk qualifier and a $156 price target, representing 42% upside, reflecting the merger with Sun Country Airlines which he calls one of the best deals in the industry’s history. Godyn notes that updated merger models suggest Allegiant’s earnings power could exceed the highest current consensus estimates. He cautions that not all airlines will sustain higher valuation multiples, with investors likely to reward resilient supermajors like Delta, United, and American, while those re-accelerating domestic capacity growth in the fourth quarter may see multiples de-rate. Shares of the combined airline have risen 60% since the merger closed.
