UK tribunal pauses FCA’s £9.1 billion car finance compensation scheme

The UK’s Upper Tribunal has suspended parts of the Financial Conduct Authority’s £9.1 billion car finance redress scheme, delaying payouts for millions of motorists. The FCA is facing legal challenges from the financial services arms of Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz, the car finance arm of Credit Agricole, and consumer group Consumer Voice, who argue the rules are unlawful. The tribunal will hear the cases in December or February next year, with a judgment expected in the following months. Under the pause, lenders do not need to calculate or pay compensation, nor inform customers of amounts owed, until the legal process concludes. If the scheme is upheld and not appealed, payments could begin in 2027; if overturned, the FCA may switch to a complaints-led approach, potentially handling up to 19 million individual complaints at an extra cost of £6 billion.

Morgan Stanley Among Banks Challenging Growing Dollar Optimism

Currency strategists at Credit Agricole, Morgan Stanley and TD Securities are among those bucking the consensus call for a stronger dollar. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index surged 2% in June, its best month since the outbreak of the Iran war, driven by expectations for high or even higher interest rates from the Federal Reserve after new Chairman Kevin Warsh stressed the central bank's commitment to fighting inflation. Speculative traders' bullish stance on the dollar has become the most extreme in a year-and-a-half, leading forecasters including Stephen Jen's Eurizon SLJ Capital to argue that investors have largely exhausted gains from betting on dollar strength. Valentin Marinov, head of G-10 currency research and strategy at Credit Agricole, said the dollar is looking overbought and overvalued and that the Fed may not be as hawkish as expected. The next test for Fed expectations comes with US employment data on Thursday, projected to show around 115,000 jobs added last month alongside rising wages, which could keep bets on Fed hikes intact.

Ray-Ban Heir Publicly Challenges Family Holding Company Over €10 Billion Buyout

Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio, an heir to the Ray-Ban empire, publicly challenged his family's holding company Delfin Sarl to back his €10 billion buyout of two siblings' stakes ahead of a June 30 shareholder meeting. In an open letter, the 31-year-old accused Delfin's board of failing to provide clear explanations for its shifting position on the proposed transaction, which would make him the largest shareholder with a 37.5% stake by purchasing the combined 25% held by his siblings Luca and Paola. Del Vecchio said the issue had become a matter of governance after lenders including UniCredit, BNP Paribas, and Credit Agricole sought greater certainty over future dividends and strategy, yet the board did not adopt a unified stance. The deal is part of a complex financing package that ranks among the largest acquisition financings ever sought by an individual in Europe, and it aims to ease divisions within the family over the succession of the Luxottica founder's empire, which became EssilorLuxottica. Delfin, with a net asset value exceeding €40 billion, holds major investments in Italian financial institutions such as Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, Assicurazioni Generali, and UniCredit.
