Waste Connections renews share buyback plan for up to 12.6 million shares
Waste Connections has received Toronto Stock Exchange approval to renew its normal course issuer bid, authorizing the repurchase of up to 12,578,462 common shares over the next 12 months. The renewed program, representing 5% of the company's 251,569,244 outstanding shares as of July 31, 2026, will run from August 12, 2026 to August 11, 2027. Daily repurchases on the TSX are capped at 95,113 shares, while NYSE and NYSE Texas limits are set at 25% of the average daily trading volume over the prior four weeks. The company views the buyback as consistent with its objective of returning capital to shareholders, and all purchased shares will be cancelled. Under the previous NCIB, Waste Connections had bought back 6,103,527 of the authorized 12,855,691 shares as of August 6, 2026.
Waste Connections Prices CAD 700 Million Senior Notes Offering
Waste Connections has priced a CAD 700 million senior notes offering in the U.S. and Canada, with proceeds expected to repay existing Canadian dollar borrowings. The company's share price stands at $167.38, with a 90-day return up 3.81% but a year-to-date decline of 3.87% and a one-year total shareholder return down 9.56%. Recent earnings, buybacks, and the new notes issuance point to a confident business, though investors are weighing whether the stock is fully valued. A popular narrative suggests the stock is 17.9% undervalued with a fair value of $203.92, supported by robust acquisition activity and a strong balance sheet, while the current price-to-earnings ratio of 39.8 times is roughly double the US Commercial Services industry average of 19.3 times, signaling potential valuation risk.
Waste Connections AI Pricing Tool Delivers $20 Million in Annualized EBITDA Benefits
Waste Connections has generated roughly $20 million in annualized EBITDA benefits from its artificial intelligence pricing tool, providing a measurable proof point for the company's broader technology program. The company is also testing AI-based routing technology to improve collection productivity, though that program remains in development. Across seven AI initiatives, Waste Connections expects a planned $100 million investment to ultimately produce $100 million in EBITDA improvement, with implementation progressing through 2028 and 2029. The technology push fits a broader operating culture that has already yielded a 13% reduction in incident rates and a 17% decline in voluntary turnover in 2025 compared with the prior year. Investors should track realized EBITDA gains rather than just planned savings, as the full return case depends on execution over several years.
Waste Connections Q2 Revenue Beats Estimates, AI and RNG Projects Drive Outlook
Waste Connections reported second-quarter revenue of $2.56 billion, exceeding analyst estimates of $2.54 billion and marking a 6.4% year-on-year increase. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $1.50, a 10.7% beat over the $1.35 consensus, while adjusted EBITDA reached $840.1 million against expectations of $831.3 million. Operating margin declined to 17.1% from 19.1% a year earlier, pressured by higher fuel costs and lower commodity values. The company highlighted that its AI-enabled commercial pricing tool, fully deployed by late 2025, contributed approximately $20 million in annualized EBITDA improvement through 2026, and management projects up to $100 million in cumulative EBITDA improvement by 2029 from AI initiatives. Waste Connections also advanced its renewable natural gas portfolio, with all plants expected to be operational by early next year, shifting capital expenditures from a headwind to a cash flow contributor. Year-to-date acquisitions added about $100 million in annualized revenue, with another $30 million in exclusive franchise deals expected to close soon, and management anticipates 2026 will be an above-average year for M&A. The full-year revenue outlook stands at approximately $10.04 billion, near analyst estimates, though the company remains cautious about macroeconomic volatility and did not factor potential July activity improvements into its guidance.
Waste Management Q1 revenues miss estimates amid mixed sector performance
Waste Management reported first-quarter revenues of $6.23 billion, up 3.5% year on year but falling short of analysts' expectations by 0.9%. The company also missed adjusted operating income estimates, though CEO Jim Fish noted strong earnings and cash flow results reflected the resilience of its business model. Among the eight waste management stocks tracked, the group's aggregate revenues missed consensus estimates by 2.7%, with Waste Connections delivering the biggest analyst estimate beat and Perma-Fix posting the weakest performance. Share prices across the group have been resilient, rising 6.8% on average since the latest earnings results.
Waste Connections Stock May Trade at 28% Discount Despite Earnings Premium
Waste Connections stock may trade at a 28% discount to its discounted cash flow intrinsic value of about $229 per share, even as its price-to-earnings ratio of 39.7 times sits well above the commercial services industry average of 21.5 times and a modeled fair multiple of 24.6 times. The company recently opened a $100 million renewable natural gas facility in Chatham-Kent, which supports expectations of durable cash generation from its free cash flow base of approximately $1.24 billion. However, the market is not fully reflecting that in the current share price, leaving investors to weigh the DCF-based undervaluation against earnings-based overvaluation. The stock has returned 39.2% over five years but declined 6.8% in the past year.
Waste Connections Gains 11.8% in a Month, Outpacing Industry
Waste Connections shares have risen 11.8% in the past month, beating the industry's 9.7% gain. The company is poised to benefit from a global waste management market projected to reach $2.4 trillion by 2033, with a 6% compound annual growth rate, and it accounts for an estimated 35% of total industry revenues. Landfill volumes grew 4% in the most recent quarter, driven by a 5% increase in municipal solid waste and an 8% rise in special waste tons, marking the sixth straight quarter of elevated special waste activity. An AI-powered pricing tool boosted customer retention and pricing efficiency by nearly 20% year over year, and management expects full AI deployment to lift margins by 100 basis points by 2028. Dividends paid rose from $271 million in 2023 to $334 million in 2025, though the company faces risks including a current ratio of 0.69, below the industry average of 1.08, and seasonal revenue swings of about 10% between the highest and lowest quarters.

Developed in partnership with Enbridge Gas, the project includes an RNG injection station and a 5.7-kilometre pipeline connecting to Enbridge Gas's distribution system.
