France ramps up military drone production in partnership with auto industry

The French government is stepping up efforts to produce military drones by leveraging the production capacity of the automotive industry. At least six defence-automotive partnerships have been announced this year, involving major players such as Renault, Valeo, and Forvia. Renault plans to mass-produce the Toutatis kamikaze drone with Thales from 2027 at a rate of 1,000 units per month, while Forvia is considering building capacity to manufacture 1,000 interceptor drones per month. Drone maker Delair is teaming up with Schaeffler to set up a production line capable of around 100 drones per day by November. If these plans materialise, total annual production capacity could reach 60,000 units, though that would still fall short of the production scale in Ukraine and Russia.

Schaeffler to cut 1,300 jobs in Germany

Schaeffler AG, a major German automotive parts supplier, is set to reduce its workforce in the country by around 1,300 people, or about 1.2 percent of total staff, through an expanded early retirement programme to cope with persistently weak demand in the automotive industry, especially in the electric vehicle market. The company said the programme will result in special expenses of around 51 million euros this year, but cost savings are expected to materialise from 2027 onwards. Chief Executive Officer Klaus Rosenfeld said the headcount reduction plan will be phased in over four years and is not a short-term measure. Although the electric drive systems business saw higher revenue, it remained loss-making in the first half of the year as demand for electric vehicles was still lower than expected.
