PSGC Partners with EDL and Lao Government to Study Pumped-Storage Hydropower, Strengthening ASEAN Energy Stability

PSG Corporation Public Company Limited, or PSGC, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Electricité du Laos and the government of the Lao PDR to study the feasibility of retrofitting existing hydropower plants into pumped-storage systems and developing new projects. Pumped-storage hydropower is seen as a key utility-scale energy storage technology capable of delivering large volumes of power continuously over long durations, helping to stabilise electricity systems that increasingly rely on renewable energy. The International Energy Agency expects pumped-storage capacity to remain significantly higher than battery storage by 2030, accounting for 30 percent of net new hydropower capacity additions worldwide. The Lao PDR is the region's largest hydropower exporter and has infrastructure ready for expansion, targeting total electricity exports of 20 gigawatts by 2030. PSGC views this project as a medium- to long-term strategic investment that requires comprehensive feasibility studies and close collaboration with the public sector from the very beginning.
