China's Unitree lists on Shanghai STAR Market, accelerating humanoid robot mass-production race

Chinese humanoid robot leader Unitree Robotics listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's STAR Market for emerging companies on the 19th. The opening price was 7.3 times the offer price, giving it a stock market value of about 445 billion yuan, or roughly 10.5 trillion yen, based on the opening price, surpassing Fanuc, the global industrial robot giant valued at about 6 trillion yen. Unitree was founded in Zhejiang Province in 2016, and its strength lies in low-cost mass production of humanoid and quadruped robots, with overseas sales accounting for about 40 percent. In Japan, Japan Airlines is testing its robots in cargo operations, and a JR East group company is using them for equipment inspections at Tokyo Station. Unitree is also jointly developing research robots with U.S. semiconductor giant Nvidia. According to British research firm Omdia, global shipments of humanoid robots in 2025 totaled about 13,300 units, with Chinese companies accounting for more than 80 percent, and Unitree alone making up 30 percent of that. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has grown increasingly wary of Chinese-made robots over security concerns. The U.S. Department of Defense designated Unitree as a Chinese military company in June, and the Federal Communications Commission has restricted equipment certification for its new products.

Nvidia has signed seven Japanese industrial giants into its new physical AI coalition, locking in a massive, long-lived stream of demand for its chips and software. Nvidia is also partnering with Noetra, a Japanese AI consortium backed by Sony, SoftBank, Honda, and dozens of other firms, to build what it calls the world's first national infrastructure for physical AI, centered on a Vera Rubin AI factory with 13,750 Vera CPUs and 27,500 Rubin GPUs delivering about 140 megawatts of compute capacity. Japan's industry ministry expects this to help the country capture 30% of the global AI robotics market by 2040, and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's government plans to mobilize more than 370 trillion yen, or 2.3 trillion dollars, in combined public and private investment by 2040 across physical AI, semiconductors, and data centers. Noetra's own roadmap calls for roughly 1 trillion yen, or 6.3 billion dollars, of sovereign AI spending over five years to develop domestic foundation models for robots and industrial AI.

Fanuc posts higher Q1 revenue and profit, lifts full-year guidance, yet shares drop over 10%

Fanuc reported higher revenue and profit for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2027 and raised its full-year earnings forecast, yet its share price fell more than 10% on August 3 from the previous day. First-quarter revenue came to 231 billion yen, up 17.7% year on year, operating profit was 53.5 billion yen, up 26.1%, recurring profit was 68.2 billion yen, up 32.3%, and net profit was 51 billion yen, up 34.7%. Recurring profit was boosted by 11.4 billion yen in equity-method investment gains. The full-year forecast was raised to 948.1 billion yen in revenue from 909.6 billion yen, and to 198 billion yen in net profit from 184.9 billion yen, assuming exchange rates of 150 yen to the dollar and 175 yen to the euro. In the factory automation segment, CNC systems grew in Japan and China. The robot segment was driven by electric vehicle-related demand in the Americas and China, and the robomachine segment also grew on increased demand in China. The stock had been trading between 6,600 yen and 7,500 yen in July, closing at 7,135 yen on July 31. But after the earnings release, it fell to 6,114 yen on August 3, the lowest level in the past month. The relatively high valuation of 28 times earnings and 3.01 times book value may have contributed to the pullback.
