Rise of the transport aftermarket in the 15th Five-Year Plan period: 3,000 km of urban rail to enter upgrade phase

China Railway Signal and Communication recently announced that during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, approximately 3,000 kilometres of urban rail transit will successively enter an upgrade and renovation phase, with high-speed rail lines requiring large-scale weak-current system upgrades exceeding 4,200 kilometres, and conventional railway renovation mileage theoretically ranging between 18,000 and 28,000 kilometres. A Shenzhen Metro management source said that based on a conservative estimate of 10 million yuan per kilometre for signalling system upgrades, the urban rail transit signalling system upgrade market alone will reach 30 billion yuan during the 15th Five-Year Plan period. Data from the China Association of Metros shows that the number of national urban rail transit signalling system renovation projects grew from one in 2023 and seven in 2024 to 14 in 2025, exhibiting a substantial growth trend. Li Hongchang, a researcher at a national high-end think tank, pointed out that stock asset renovation will significantly drive niche sectors such as intelligent operation and maintenance and digital signalling upgrades, playing a notable role in cultivating digital elements and developing new quality productive forces. China Railway Signal and Communication expects to maintain its industry-leading position in the rail transit market over the next three to five years.
