The Nikkei Average rebounded on the 14th, closing 500 yen higher at 67,743 yen. It started lower on the back of a decline in US stocks, and at one point in early trading fell by more than 900 yen. However, in the afternoon session, as South Korea's KOSPI index regained composure, movements in AI-related stocks improved, and the index turned positive. Trading value on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was approximately 10.76 trillion yen. By sector, mining, shipping, and chemicals posted sharp gains, while only three sectors declined: non-ferrous metals, machinery, and glass and ceramics. Japan's Alternative Lending Market Projected to Reach $53.67 Billion by 2029

Japan's alternative lending market is forecast to grow to US$53.67 billion by 2029, according to a new report from ResearchAndMarkets.com. The market is expected to reach an estimated US$35.74 billion in 2026, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 14.5% from 2026 to 2029. This follows a 14.1% CAGR from 2020 to 2025, with the market valued at US$31.64 billion in 2025. Key drivers include the evolution of pay-later models integrated into payment apps, alignment of buy-now-pay-later services with regulatory frameworks such as the Installment Sales Act, and the embedding of SME finance into software platforms through partnerships like MUFG and freee. The competitive landscape is consolidating around major payment and commerce ecosystems, with notable players including PayPay Card, Mercari and Merpay, and Money Forward.
