Nvidia forecasts 20-fold surge in indium phosphide demand, A-share related concept stocks rally

A-share indium phosphide concept stocks rallied collectively on August 6. Bojie Co., Yunnan Germanium each hit their third consecutive daily limit up, Youyan New Materials rose for a second straight day, and Oulai New Materials, Xingye Technology, Suqian Liansheng, and Haite High-Tech were among the top gainers. The catalyst was Nvidia's forecast that global indium phosphide wafer demand will surge roughly 20-fold from 2026 to 2030. However, expanding indium phosphide substrate production is extremely difficult: a single production line requires over 1.2 billion yuan in investment, and the expansion cycle lasts three to five years, meaning new supply will lag far behind demand growth. Indium phosphide is a classic III-V compound semiconductor material with strong suitability for optical communications and high-speed electronic devices. The explosion in AI computing power demand is directly driving continuous expansion of its market size. The supply side faces rigid constraints. Indium is a rare dispersed non-ferrous metal, with about 90 percent of primary indium coming as a byproduct of zinc smelting. China holds the world's largest indium reserves, with proven reserves of about 20,000 tonnes, accounting for 75 percent of global recoverable reserves. China has also imposed export controls on indium phosphide and capped annual indium exports at no more than 30 percent of annual output. Multiple brokerages believe that upstream indium resources are subject to the dual constraints of being a byproduct and under export controls, and that indium phosphide substrates, as the most upstream manufacturing segment of the supply chain, are currently the most critical bottleneck in the AI optical module chain. The supply-demand imbalance is unlikely to ease in the short term, and upstream scarce resources as well as companies with large-size substrate mass production capabilities will benefit over the long term.

Minor metals surge as AI computing drives demand for germanium, tantalum, and molybdenum

On August 6, the minor metals sector rose 3.12% intraday, with Yunnan Germanium hitting its daily limit up, and China Tungsten and Hightech and Dongfang Tantalum among the top gainers. A Changjiang Securities research note pointed out that the minor metals sector is shifting from valuation contraction to a fundamentals-driven uptrend. Tantalum is benefiting from rising demand for polymer tantalum capacitors driven by high power consumption in AI chips. Nvidia's GB200 has already adopted them at scale, and per-unit tantalum capacitor usage in the GB300 and Rubin platforms is expected to increase further, marking an industry inflection point. Molybdenum, a critical metal for oil and gas and military applications, is also seeing long-term growth potential from the trend of replacing tungsten with molybdenum in semiconductors, in addition to cyclical restocking logic.

PBOC Launches 500 Billion Yuan MLF Operation; Beijing Introduces Measures to Boost AI Agents

The People's Bank of China conducted a 500 billion yuan one-year medium-term lending facility operation on July 24, using a fixed-quantity, rate-bidding, multiple-price auction method. The Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission and other departments jointly issued the "Several Measures to Accelerate the Development Led by AI Agents in Beijing," encouraging the growth of the token economy, promoting the research and development of general-purpose processors and specialized inference chips, and fostering new business models such as Token-as-a-Service. The price of vinylene carbonate surged 11 percent on July 23, with quotes approaching 200,000 yuan per ton, and cumulative gains of nearly 25 percent since the start of July. Institutions expect supply to become extremely tight from the third quarter to the fourth quarter. Yunnan Germanium's holding subsidiary Yunnan Xinyao signed an indium phosphide wafer supply agreement, with a total contract value between 570 million and 855 million yuan, accounting for 53.48 percent to 80.23 percent of the company's 2025 revenue. Puya Semiconductor expects net profit in the first half of 2026 to be approximately 825 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 1,925.36 percent.
